Done Deal–Arsenal complete summer transfer after talks

Illan Meslier to Arsenal: Gunners complete free signing that nobody saw coming

Illan Meslier to Arsenal: Arsenal have just pulled off one of the quietest transfer masterstrokes of the summer. No endless saga. No ridiculous bidding wars. Just a smart, calculated piece of business to bring Illan Meslier to North London on a zero-fee deal.

Sky Sports News broke the story that the former Leeds United goalkeeper has signed a two-year contract at the Emirates Stadium, with the club holding an option for a third. After Leeds let his contract run down at the end of last season, the 26-year-old was a free agent. It is a massive opportunity for a player whose career had completely stalled in Yorkshire.

Meslier’s final years at Elland Road were brutal. Once the undisputed number one under Marcelo Bielsa, he lost his place to Karl Darlow during their 2024–25 Championship promotion campaign after a string of costly high-profile errors. By last season, he was virtually invisible, sitting third in the pecking order behind Darlow and Lucas Perri. Zero first-team appearances. Only two run-outs for the under-23s. It was a spectacular fall from grace for a keeper who racked up 215 appearances and 70 clean sheets for Leeds. (Via Goal.com)

A low-risk backup option for Mikel Arteta

Let’s be clear about one thing: he is not here to displace David Raya. Raya won the Premier League Golden Glove last season and is firmly established as the first choice for the upcoming title defence.

Instead, Meslier provides experienced depth. He slots in as the secondary option, especially with Kepa Arrizabalaga’s future at the club looking incredibly uncertain before the window closes. It also allows 20-year-old prospect Tommy Setford to leave on loan to get proper, competitive minutes. For Arsenal, it makes total sense. They get a goalkeeper with 107 Premier League appearances and proven shot-stopping ability without spending a single penny on a transfer fee.

Meslier himself could not hide his excitement when speaking to the club’s official website.

“I’m extremely happy,” he said. “It’s a great day for me because I have just joined the champions. For me, Arsenal is the biggest club in England. I’m very happy and very proud to join Arsenal. I cannot wait to show the love that I’ve got for this badge, and I cannot wait to win trophies with this team, because this is a club that needs to lift trophies again and again.”

He will take the number 30 shirt and join up with his new teammates at the Sobha Realty Training Centre for pre-season. Arsenal start their league campaign against newly promoted Coventry City on 21 August. Born in Lorient, Brittany, Meslier came through their academy to make his senior debut at just 18. His trajectory looked set for the very top before a difficult couple of years checked his progress. Now, he gets his big move.
