Arsenal confirm marquee free transfer of Barcelona defender Ona Batlle

Arsenal Women have completed the signing of Spain defender Ona Batlle on a free transfer from Barcelona, adding one of Europe’s most decorated full-backs to Renée Slegers’ squad.

The 27-year-old has signed a four-year contract, with the club holding an option for a further year, after Arsenal confirmed the deal on Friday.

Batlle arrives with elite experience. She won two Women’s Champions League titles during three seasons at Barcelona and was a key part of Spain’s 2023 World Cup-winning side. Arsenal also confirmed she has 76 senior international caps and will wear the number 22 shirt.

Clare Wheatley described Batlle as “one of the best defenders in the world”, while the player said she had come to north London “to win trophies”.

Her arrival continues an aggressive Arsenal Women window. ReadArsenal recently covered how Geraldine Reuteler’s signing gave Slegers another flexible midfield option, and Batlle now strengthens a back line that lost Katie McCabe to Chelsea earlier this summer.

💬 “Arsenal are one of the biggest clubs in the world. How they want to play is how I want to play.”

Batlle Gives Arsenal Experience On Either Flank

Batlle’s profile makes the move an obvious one for Arsenal.

She can play at right-back or left-back, brings big-match pedigree and arrives after 114 appearances for Barcelona. She also spent two seasons in the WSL with Manchester United, so the adjustment to English football should be minimal.

That matters for Arsenal. Slegers is not adding a development project here. She is adding a proven winner who should improve the level of the starting defence straight away.

With Georgia Stanway, Selina Cerci, Geraldine Reuteler and now Batlle through the door, Arsenal Women’s rebuild is gathering real pace before the new season.
