Sheffield Wednesday-linked defender pictured in training with Bradford City

A Sheffield Wednesday-linked defender appears to be training with Bradford City

Free agent defender Reece Welch has been pictured in training with Bradford City following the expiry of his Everton contract.

The 22-year-old was released by the Toffees at the end of last season having failed to make a first-team breakthrough.

A centre-back by trade, Welch knocked on the door in Merseyside but left having made just three senior appearances.

A picture shared to Bradford playmaker Antoni Sarcevic’s Instagram story shows Welch alongside a clutch of Bantams on the training pitch.

Welch could well be on trial with the West Yorkshire club, although there are many reasons he could be training with the club.

The defender is undoubtedly a player with potential, as evidenced by the England youth caps on his CV. However, the Huddersfield-born prospect has not had much exposure to senior football.

He had brief loan spells at Forest Green Rovers and Deinze during his time at Everton, but made just 26 appearandes across both stints.

Reece Welch’s Everton exit

After being released by Everton, Welch said: “After 14 years at Everton and unforgettable memories, it’s finally time to say goodbye.

“I would like to thank everyone at the club, staff, teammates and most importantly the fans for supporting me through this journey. I’ve been proud to call this club home and it has been a massive part of my life.

“I’ve met many incredible people along the way and would like to wish everyone at the club all the best.”

Bradford have already been busy in the transfer market, recruiting the likes of Jon McCracken, Adam Phillips and Jake Beesley.
