Arsenal's£10m transfer blow confirmed as Mikel Arteta loses out to Manchester City

Manchester City have announced the acquisition of Jeremy Monga from Leicester City.

The teenager, who celebrated his 17th birthday this week, arrives at the Etihad Stadium in a £10million deal including add-ons and will integrate with Enzo Maresca's senior squad. Midfielder Monga is set to accompany the Blues on their pre-season tour of Asia later this month, where he'll have the opportunity to showcase his abilities to City's coaching staff.

He has signed a five-year contract at the Etihad, with City optimistic that he will progress into a first-team player.

Whether the youngster remains with the Blues this season or goes out on loan is yet to be determined, but his initial experience will be alongside the senior players and he will feature this summer when the Blues face Inter Milan, the K-League All Stars and Atletico Madrid.

City have been tracking the youngster for some time and were one of several leading clubs who assessed him last summer.

The Blues eventually opted against pursuing a deal and Monga agreed a one-year scholarship with the Foxes that would convert to a professional contract upon turning 17.

That agreement meant a transfer fee would be required for his departure and initially it appeared Arsenal would secure his signature having held discussions this summer.

However, City, supported by new manager Maresca, acted late and finalised an agreement with Leicester, with the Gunners having withdrawn from the pursuit, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Maresca has undoubtedly influenced City's growing interest in the winger, having managed Leicester while Monga was progressing through the academy during the Italian's tenure in the East Midlands in the 2023/24 campaign.

That connection is significant, but City's determination to secure the finest young prospects is equally important, alongside the conviction that Monga, who has already racked up 37 senior outings for Leicester, including seven off the bench in the Premier League, possesses the qualities to develop into a first-team player.

Monga has predominantly featured on the left flank for Leicester but is versatile enough to operate centrally or on the right.

He made his breakthrough aged just 15 when coming off the bench in a Premier League clash with Newcastle United in April 2025, with only Arsenal pair Max Dowman and Ethan Nwaneri having featured in a top-flight match at a younger age.
