Manchester City confirm fresh loan challenge for midfielder after Middlesbrough spell

Manchester City have confirmed a fresh loan challenge for Sverre Nypan after his Middlesbrough spell

Manchester City have confirmed a fresh loan challenge for Sverre Nypan following his underwhelming loan spell at Middlesbrough.

A senior Norway international, he had arrived at Manchester City from Rosenborg with a reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting young talents.

He made a total of 21 appearances for Middlesbrough, but was afforded just three Championship starts before his loan deal was terminated by mutual consent in February.

Fresh loan challenge for Sverre Nypan

After ending the 2025/26 campaign in the under-21s set-up at Manchester City, Nypan has been loaned to Belgium outfit Lommel. The top-flight club are part of the City Football Group and are led by former Barnsley boss Lee Johnson.

The club’s sporting director Jeffrey van As said: “With Sverre, we are bringing in a young and creative midfielder.

“Despite his age, he has already gained experience at the highest level and has trained with Manchester City's first team. He will be a great addition to our midfield, and we are looking forward to seeing him in action for Lommel.”

Nypan added: “I already feel at home in Lommel. You immediately notice that this is a real family club with outstanding facilities.

“I see this as the ideal place to develop at this stage of my career. I'm looking forward to showing what I can do on the pitch and meeting the fans.”

Learning curve

Nypan may not have lit up the Championship as supporters had hoped, but his time at the Riverside may still serve him well.

The second tier of English football is an unforgiving division, but one that can develop players and teach valuable lessons.

In an interview with Nettavisen back in October, Nypan said: “I feel I have already taken some steps up in terms of fitness and have more steps to take.

“Demands are set and that’s actually nice. It’s very educational and something I needed. I’m learning a lot from it. It was something I needed and part of the reason why I went there. I don’t like to think that far into the future. I’ll take this season here with Middlesbrough, and we’ll see what happens.”
