It was a night to forget for Belgian goalkeepers at the SoFi Stadium. Thibaut Courtois didn't cover himself in glory when spilling a shot for Fabian Ruiz to open the scoring in their World Cup quarter-final against Spain, only for his replacement, Senne Lammens, to make an even worse mistake to let Mikel Merino in to win the tie.
Lammens had replaced Cortouis in the second half after the Real Madrid goalkeeper picked up an injury, but his third cap for his country ended in agony. He spilt Pau Cubari's 88th-minute shot, and Merino was quickest to react to send Spain into a semi-final against France.
There will be criticism and scrutiny to follow now, with the 24-year-old Manchester United goalkeeper in the firing line. He clearly should have held the shot and he will be disappointed he didn't.
It's perhaps the biggest moment in Lammens' career. He is still young for a goalkeeper and hasn't had much experience. He joined United after just 64 games at Royal Antwerp.
But there is every reason to believe he will be able to shrug this error off and come back stronger. He was almost faultless in his first season at Old Trafford, but there was one big error in the home victory against Liverpool.
A poor pass from Lammens led to Cody Gakpo scoring in that game in May, but the goalkeeper shrugged it off and came back stronger. He was excellent for the final three games of the season.
His mentality was something many at United pointed to last season. It was a big step-up from playing for Royal Antwerp in Belgium's top flight to being United's No. 1, but he looked unfazed by it.
"The jump that he's had is a big jump, no disrespect," Michael Carrick said after an excellent performance from Lammens at Everton in February.
"It's a huge jump for the one he made and to take it like he has done and just get on with things speaks volumes of his personality, and he's able to just deal with the environment and play at that level."
That approach should serve him well now that he is coming under scrutiny for the first time. This might be harsher as well. Although he made a mistake against Liverpool, United still won the game to secure a return to the Champions League. This time, his mistake ended Belgium's World Cup.
He will get time off now to clear his head and will report to Carrington for pre-season training in three weeks. From what United have seen, they will believe he will be over this by the time he is back at the club.
It's the life of a goalkeeper that you will make mistakes, and for Lammens, one has come on the biggest stage of all, but his first season at United showed he has the mentality to put it behind him.
