Sky Sports: Newcastle 'astounded' by what Arsenal have done in Bruno Guimaraes pursuit

Bruno Guimaraes looks like he could be the next player to join the exodus from Newcastle United.

Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali are already big-name departures from St James' Park, with Newcastle bagging £169million from those two sales alone, but there could be more.

Guimaraes has been courted by Arsenal for some time, with the Gunners linked with signing the Brazilian from Lyon before he even made the move to St James' Park in 2022.

Now the Gunners are going back in for him as Mikel Arteta looks to improve his midfield department at the Emirates Stadium in the defence of their Premier League crown next season.

Guimaraes has already agreed personal terms with Arsenal, according to reports, after the 28-year-old made it clear to the Magpies hierarchy that he would like to leave to join the Gunners.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano said: "It's true that there is an agreement already in principle, on personal terms, between Bruno Guimaraes and Arsenal.

"I told you already in two, three videos, personal terms are never going to be a problem. Bruno Guimaraes doesn't go to Newcastle and say, 'Let me go to Arsenal', without having an agreement with Arsenal."

All that remains is for a fee to be agreed between the two clubs, although that may be a problem. Arsenal have seen an initial £55million bid knocked back, with Newcastle demanding a fee in the region of £90million to let their captain leave.

And according to Sky Sports, the Mapgies have been left "astonished" by Guimaraes' admission that he wants to sign for Arsenal for one key reason - they have not heard from the Gunners.

Speaking on YouTube, Sky Sports north east reporter Keith Downie said: "The situation regarding Guimaraes, as we know, is that yesterday we ran the news broken first by the Athletic's David Ornstein. I have to say that Bruno Guimaraes has alerted Newcastle as to his willingness to want to speak to or explore a move to Arsenal. He essentially has told Newcastle he wants to leave.

"Now, I don't know, I have to be honest, whether that's directly or indirectly because every time I've asked the club the direct question, I've been told that they don't want to get dragged into this.

"But what I can say from Newcastle's point of view is that they are astonished, astounded, confused, perplexed by the fact that Bruno Guimaraes has said he wants to explore a move to Arsenal when Arsenal have yet to make an offer or even directly contacted Newcastle regarding the Brazilian international. It's incredible. I've never heard of this before."
