Jack Grealish is working hard in the gym as he prepares for Manchester City’s return for pre-season.

The playmaker shared footage of him working out on an exercise bike along with City teammate Kalvin Phillips. Both are expected to be on the periphery of Enzo Maresca’s plans this summer and therefore set to be available.

Before last summer, Phillips had repeatedly been linked with Everton following the struggles he encountered after moving from Leeds United. But Grealish will be the focus of Blues’ fans’ attention over the coming weeks with supporters craving a reunion after his positive spell on Merseyside last season.

Senior figures at Everton would also be open to the return of the 30-year-old. Grealish added stardust to the team through the first half of last season and galvanised the club for its first full season under new ownership and at Hill Dickinson Stadium - providing two assists in the curtain-raising win over Brighton and Hove Albion on the Liverpool waterfront.

Grealish spoke openly about the relationship he quickly formed with David Moyes and Everton supporters and their role in rekindling his love of football. His season-ending injury was a severe blow in January but he worked through the bulk of his recovery at Finch Farm rather than returning to his parent club, that work continuing beyond the end of last season and including a breakthrough when he returned to light training.

He shared an image of himself on the Everton training pitches last month alongside the caption: “Ahhh man can’t even explain how good this felt! 5 months ago since I last put my boots on. Back on the grass today! Best feeling ever man. Time to get ready.”

Where he will ply his trade next season remains unknown, with City keen to pursue a sale for the player they signed for £100m. Everton are expected to explore a loan move - though any development will also depend on the strength of his recovery from the stress fracture that ended his season prematurely.
