Jurgen Klopp is on the verge of a return to management, with the former Liverpool boss having reached an agreement with the Germany football association.
Klopp was instantly installed as the favorite to become the new Germany boss after the four-time world champions’ early exit from the World Cup, having been knocked out by Paraguay in the round-of-32.
After Julian Nagelsmann resigned as manager, the DFB announced it was entering talks with Klopp as it looked to hand the 59-year-old his first management position since leaving Liverpool in 2024, having worked as Red Bull’s head of global soccer since January 2025.
According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Klopp and the DFB have now reached an agreement in principle following a breakthrough in negotiations in New York, with the Reds’ former boss currently in the US working as a pundit at the World Cup.
Klopp is set to sign a contract running until the end of the 2030 World Cup, meaning he is due to lead his country into two tournaments, with his first assignment being Euro 2028. Final details are still being worked on, but he is now expected to finalize his exit from Red Bull in the next few days.
Klopp confirmed he has been in talks with the DFB last week, with Germany moving quickly to try and secure his services.

He told Magenta TV: "Yes, I can confirm the talks. Things moved pretty quickly. Julian stepped down. The DFB are looking for a successor. And they’re talking to me.”
Klopp added: I’m under contract with Red Bull. I’ve said I’m interested in the talks. They will be intensive because this isn’t only about Julian Nagelsmann.
“I also have to speak with Oliver Mintzlaff. He’s my employer. We’ve already touched on a few things. I assume he won’t stand in the way. I’ve been there for 19 months. It was an intense time.”

If he is appointed as expected, Klopp's first assignment will see him take charge of his country for the extended international break starting in September. Germany faces the Netherlands in its opening Nations League encounter on September 24, before further games against Greece (September 27 and October 4) and Serbia (October 1).

That opening game against the Dutch could see him come up against another former Liverpool boss, with Arne Slot being tipped to take over from Ronald Koeman following the Netherlands boss' own departure from his job.
