The death of former Leeds United owner Ken Bates at the age of 94 has been confirmed
A familiar face in English football, Bates completed a takeover of Leeds in January 2005. He spent nearly eight years as the Whites owner, overseeing relegation to League One in 2007 and then promotion back to the Championship in 2010.
Bates had previously owned Chelsea, having bought the club for £1 in 1982 amid financial turbulence at Stamford Bridge. He owned the Blues until 2003, when he sold the club to Roman Abramovich.

A spokesperson for Chelsea said: “Chelsea Football Club is today mourning the passing of former chairman Ken Bates. The club sends our heartfelt condolences to Ken’s wife Suzannah, the rest of his family and his friends.
“Ken’s determination to fight for Chelsea when times were tough, and drive the team on to winning trophies will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Ken.”
