Arsenal begin talks to complete signing of France World Cup star–Arteta will be happy

Manu Kone to Arsenal: Gunners enter £50m transfer race

Manu Kone to Arsenal: The transfer window does this every single summer. Just when you think a club have their entire strategy mapped out, a fresh name drops into the mixer and changes the temperature completely.

Arsenal are now firmly in the hunt for AS Roma’s Manu Kone. According to reports from TEAMtalk, intermediaries representing the 25-year-old French midfielder have been sounding out the Premier League’s heavyweights, and the Gunners have actively taken the call. It is not a done deal yet. Far from it. But the sheer speed of this development tells you everything you need to know about how highly the player is rated across Europe.

It is a proper scramble. Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Liverpool have all had their doors knocked on, too. Roma simply cannot afford to keep him off the shop floor anymore. The Italian giants are under immense pressure to satisfy UEFA’s financial regulations and balance their books, meaning Kone, their most prized sellable asset, is available. The price tag is a firm £50m. (Via GMS)

Honestly? That looks like a bit of a steal in the current market.

Kone was an absolute workhorse in Serie A during the 2025/26 campaign, racking up 2,459 minutes across 29 appearances. He started 28 of those matches, chipping in with two goals and three assists from the engine room. His passing metrics are ridiculous. He completed 1,163 successful passes last term, dominating games and setting the tempo for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side. He has serious backing, too. Rio Ferdinand went on record calling him France’s best midfielder, while Micah Richards flagged him up as “outstanding” just before the World Cup.

Right now, the player is out in the United States with Les Bleus. He told reporters he is completely focused on the tournament and blocking out the noise. His camp, however, is busy. Italian outlet VoceGiallorossa, via Get Italian Football News, confirmed his agents are actively laying the groundwork in England.

A genuine priority or just a safety net?

Mikel Arteta’s heart still belongs to Bruno Guimarães. The Newcastle captain is the primary target for the north London club, and Arsenal will not abandon that chase without a fight. Landing both Kone and Guimarães would be an incredible statement of intent, but financially, it feels a bit far-fetched. Especially with Christian Norgaard reportedly cleared to leave the Emirates, a move that signals Arteta wants a direct replacement rather than a bloated squad.

Kone looks like insurance. A top-tier backup plan if Newcastle price them out of a move for Guimarães. Sporting director Andrea Berta is currently spinning several plates, including talks over Morocco’s Ayyoub Bouaddi, and understands the necessity of having options at the negotiating table. Kone fits the profile perfectly. At 6ft 1in, he offers brute physicality, press-resistance, and an uncanny ability to carry the ball out of tight spaces.

Roma bought him from Borussia Mönchengladbach in August 2024 for around £20m. Flipping him for £50m less than two years later is brilliant business for them. Gasperini has moulded him into a terrifyingly efficient box-to-box hybrid. He is calm under pressure, dominant in the air, and loves to ping raking diagonal passes across the pitch to turn defence into attack in a heartbeat.

Whether Berta and Arteta pull the trigger depends entirely on how Newcastle behave. If the Guimarães deal falls through, the door for Kone flies wide open.
