Arsenal Illan Meslier transfer is now complete after weeks of talks. The Premier League champions have added another goalkeeper to their squad, but what role will the French keeper play under Mikel Arteta next season?
Arsenal complete free transfer for Illan Meslier
Arsenal have completed the signing of French goalkeeper Illan Meslier after his contract with Leeds United expired. As reported by BBC Sport, the deal was finalised after the 26-year-old completed his medical and the remaining paperwork at the club’s training centre in Hertfordshire. The French keeper joins on a free transfer after spending seven seasons at Leeds.
Meslier first arrived in England on loan from Lorient in 2019 before making the move permanent. He helped Leeds return to the Premier League and later became their first-choice goalkeeper. However, he lost that place during the 2025-26 season before leaving the club at the end of his contract. Speaking after the move, Meslier said he was proud to join Arsenal. As reported by Reuters, he added that he wants to improve every day, earn playing time and help the club win more trophies. He will wear the number 30 shirt and join pre-season training with his new teammates.
Illan Meslier’s stats for 2024-25 season and 2025-26 season, as per FOTMOB:
Season Matches Saves Goals Conceded Penalties Saved Clean Sheets
2024-2025 39 65 27 1/4 21
2025-2026 2 7 6 1/1 0
Why Arsenal made the move
The signing gives Mikel Arteta extra depth in the goalkeeping department. As reported by BBC Sport, uncertainty over Kepa Arrizabalaga’s future encouraged Arsenal to look for another experienced goalkeeper this summer. David Raya remains the club’s first-choice goalkeeper after winning the Premier League trophy and the league’s Golden Glove last season. Meslier is expected to begin as the third-choice option. However, if Kepa Arrizabalaga leaves before the summer transfer window closes, the French goalkeeper could move directly into the backup keeper role.
As reported by The Independent, Arsenal believe Meslier still has plenty of potential despite a difficult final season at Leeds. Signing a player with Premier League experience on a free transfer also represents good value. His arrival is expected to lead to teenage goalkeeper Tommy Setford leaving on loan for regular first-team football. As reported by BBC Sport, the move is part of the club’s long-term development plan for the young keeper.
Fresh opportunity in north London
Meslier now has the chance to rebuild his career at one of England’s biggest clubs. Although his final year at Leeds was disappointing, he still brings valuable experience after playing more than 200 senior matches in English football.
As reported by Reuters, the goalkeeper said his main focus is to work hard with Arsenal’s coaching staff, continue improving and be ready whenever the team needs him. The transfer is a low-risk move because Arsenal did not pay a transfer fee. If Meslier returns to his best form, the Premier League champions will have another reliable goalkeeper ready for a long season across domestic and European competitions.
Author’s Opinion
This feels like a smart squad signing by the Gunners rather than a major headline transfer. The Gunners have added proven experience without spending a transfer fee. They now have a keeper as a backup to Kepa. Meanwhile Meslier receives the fresh start he needed.
