Transfer season is well and truly upon us with Newcastle United among the clubs subject to speculation over possible incomings and outgoings.
Eddie Howe is looking to strengthen his squad after a disappointing 2025/26 season. The Magpies finished in 12th place in the Premier League title, meaning that there will be no European football at St James’ Park in the coming season.
For Howe and his backroom staff, it will now be about building a squad to climb back up the table and into European contention. The club have been busy in the window, completing deals for goalkeeper Ewan Jaouen, midfielder Sean Steur and winger Bazoumana Toure.
They have also seen players leave, with Anthony Gordon completing a £70m move to Barcelona, and Sandro Tonali signing for Tottenham for £100m.
With weeks of the transfer window still remaining, here is a look at some of the latest news from around St James’ Park with ChronicleLive also giving our thoughts on the situation.
New Newcastle interest
Everton are showing an interest in Newcastle winger Jacob Murphy, according to Sky Sports. The 31-year-old has 12 months on his contract at St James’ Park.
It’s added that Everton are yet to make contact with Newcastle over a possible move, but are keen to sign the player. The winger has been with the Magpies, the club he supported as a child, since joining from Norwich City in the summer of 2017.
ChronicleLive says: Murphy has been a key player for Newcastle amid their rise, but with just a year remaining on his contract, it leaves the club with a decision to make. If he doesn’t sign a new contract, then they risk losing him for nothing next summer.
Murphy has competition in the squad from Anthony Elanga, with new signing Bazoumana Toure more comfortable playing on the left.
Newcastle are under no pressure to sell, and, with him being an Eddie Howe favourite, it seems unlikely he will be moved on unless a big fee is offered.
Arsenal transfer threat
Arsenal could be a transfer threat to Newcastle in their hope of signing Botafogo midfielder Danilo. Journalist Jorge Nicola claims on his YouTube channel that the player prefers a return to English football ahead of a move to Palmeiras, who are also interested.
The 25-year-old previously played for Nottingham Forest, before moving back to Brazil last summer.
Newcastle have been linked with a move, but there is also a claim that Arsenal are now showing an interest in the midfielder.
If they are to sell, Botafogo reportedly want a fee of at least €30 million (£25.6m).
ChronicleLive says: Newcastle are closing in on the signing of Johan Manzambi, meaning that they may now not turn to Danilo, unless they are in need of a replacement for Bruno Guimaraes if he signs for Arsenal.
Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson was, however, with Forest when the midfielder arrived at the City Ground, meaning there is a direct link with the player.

Bruno Guimaraes stance
As reported by ChronicleLive, Newcastle will instantly reject any lowball offers for Bruno Guimaraes this month amid speculation over his future. There has been talk that Arsenal have already offered the midfielder a five-year deal.
But, while Bruno’s deal has just two years remaining, Newcastle have the option to extend it by a further year. That therefore puts the club in a stronger position to demand whatever they want for the 28-year-old.
Claims that Bruno has asked to leave the Magpies have been played down and the club insist that he will not be sold this summer. While an official bid is expected from Arsenal, it’s likely to fall short of Newcastle’s valuation, meaning that it will be swiftly rejected.
With no minimum fee release clauses involved, Newcastle could ask for much more than the £60 million price tag being mentioned.
