As if things surrounding Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes weren’t already dramatic enough amid his summer-long Arsenal transfer saga, his father has now entered the public picture.
Dick Guimaraes, a familiar face among Newcastle supporters since his son’s arrival in 2022, posted an interesting message on Instagram days after Brazil’s World Cup elimination and amid the steady transfer links with Arsenal.
Translated from Portuguese, via Newcastle World, the post read: “You need courage to enter the arena and do what needs to be done. From the stands, it is very easy to give opinions.”
It’s worth noting that Dick’s message comes after Bruno’s missed penalty in Brazil’s World Cup defeat to Norway, which prompted criticism in his home country, as that could have turned into an early game-winning goal for the South American nation. Instead, Brazil crashed out after losing 2-1 to Norway at the start of July.
Dick’s post also arrives as Arsenal continues to be linked with a move for the 28-year-old midfielder, which will only add yet another page to an endless book of rumors and stories around Bruno’s potential transfer to the Premier League champions.
According to the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope, representatives acting on Bruno’s behalf have held discussions with Arsenal and communicated a verbal proposal to Newcastle. The Magpies immediately rejected the approach, reiterating that their captain is not for sale.
Hope added that Newcastle plans to discuss a new contract with Bruno once the midfielder returns from international duty, provided he is open to extending his stay at St. James’ Park.
Meanwhile, The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards reported Friday that there had been “no offers, no bids, no conversations” directly between the clubs, with discussions taking place only through intermediaries. Edwards added that sources inside Newcastle described Arsenal’s approach as “very odd” given the amount of public speculation.
As things stand, and despite the ongoing speculation, it looks like Newcastle has still not received a formal bid from Arsenal as their stance remains unchanged regarding Bruno’s availability.
