Liverpool are facing another significant summer of change as preparations continue for the new season, with the club looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2025/26 campaign.
After already strengthening the side this summer, there has been optimism that the club can make real progress in the months ahead.
However, attention has now turned towards the possibility of a high-profile exit that is a major surprise given how recently the player arrived at the club.
Behind the scenes, discussions are understood to be progressing over a deal that could see one of Liverpool’s most impressive recent signings leave Merseyside.
While the Reds are expected to receive a substantial transfer fee, losing such an important player so soon after investing heavily into them would represent a frustrating setback.
According to BBC Sport, Liverpool Womens midfielder Denise O’Sullivan is expected to leave the club just six months after joining in a club-record £300,000 move.
The Republic of Ireland international is believed to favour a return to the National Women’s Soccer League, with Gotham FC emerging as the frontrunners for her signature.
O’Sullivan made an immediate impact following her arrival in January, quickly establishing herself as one of Liverpool’s standout performers.
She featured 13 times in all competitions, including nine Women’s Super League appearances, while helping Gareth Taylor’s side reach the Women’s FA Cup semi-finals.
Her anticipated departure is not thought to be football-related.
Instead, the decision is understood to be a personal one, with the midfielder eager to return to the United States after spending nine successful seasons with North Carolina Courage. During that spell, she made more than 150 appearances and captained the club, cementing her reputation as one of the NWSL’s most respected players.
Although losing a player of O’Sullivan’s calibre would be a disappointing blow, Liverpool still plan to be active for the remainder of the transfer window.
With several new additions already through the door, the club will now hope to offset the loss by continuing to strengthen Gareth Taylor’s squad ahead of the new campaign.
