Arsenal are firmly leading the race for£130m attacking target

Morgan Rogers to Arsenal: Gunners lead the race as Villa hold firm on British-record demand

Morgan Rogers to Arsenal: Arsenal are closing in on the Aston Villa forward but face a significant financial test as the Midlands club refuse to blink on their eye-watering valuation. Arsenal are firmly in front. Mikel Arteta wants his man, and a formal bid is expected to land in the next few days. While Manchester United, Chelsea, and Liverpool have all sniffed around, the Gunners are the ones setting the pace.

Villa are playing hardball. They want more than £130 million. It is a staggering amount of money, a figure that would completely rewrite the British transfer record. Unai Emery’s side have no intention of budging, either. They have made that crystal clear to everyone.

The player’s side of things looks much simpler. Personal terms are practically sorted. Word is that a five-year contract has essentially been agreed in principle. Arteta sees Rogers as his ideal option for the left flank, a direct replacement for Leandro Trossard, who is off to Besiktas in a €20 million deal.

Arsenal plan to test the waters with an opening offer of around £72 million. That is just a starting point. Villa will throw it straight out. The hierarchy in Birmingham is using the £116 million Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson as their baseline. It leaves a massive gap between the two clubs.

The rivals waiting in the shadows

Chelsea are still lingering. Joe Shields, their recruitment chief, knows Rogers well from his previous roles and keeps driving that interest. Manchester City are also keeping tabs, keen on the idea of bringing their former academy kid back to the Etihad Stadium. Arsenal have the edge because of those personal terms, but the others cannot be ruled out yet.

The price tag is wild, but the form justifies it. Rogers absolutely flew last season. He racked up 37 Premier League appearances, bagging 10 goals and 6 assists. In all competitions, he hit 14 goals and set up another 12. He even scooped the UEFA Europa League Player of the Season award after Villa lifted the silverware in May. Gareth Southgate put him in the England squad for the World Cup in North America. He is one of the most dangerous forwards in the country right now.

Villa bought him from Middlesbrough for a modest £7 million back in early 2024. Crucially, they tied him down to a long-term contract extension until 2031. They hold all the cards here. Arsenal paid £117 million for Declan Rice a few years back. Spending even more than that on a 23-year-old winger shows serious intent. Some people in the game think the clubs will compromise around £115 million or £120 million. Rogers himself laughed off the price tag when journalists asked him about it on England duty. He knows the numbers are crazy.
