Arsenal are approaching a decisive period in the summer window, which will determine their success next season. With the World Cup winding down this week, focus will shift towards club football again, and with it, the transfer window.
Despite no major signings being announced as of yet, Gunners sporting director Andrea Berta has been biding his time so far. The Italian has scoured the market for the best possible deals while reportedly making progress by agreeing personal terms with several top transfer targets, including Bruno Guimaraes and Morgan Rogers.
The remainder of this month is set to be busy as last year saw Arsenal confirm a whopping six signings in July alone. While so many additions are unlikely this time around, it is expected that Berta and Mikel Arteta will look to add several high-quality signings before the season begins with the Community Shield clash with Manchester City on August 16.
Eight Arsenal stars set to miss matches
The eight Arsenal players who have reached the semi-finals of the World Cup have been set a return date to club football. All players are officially given a minimum of 21 days off as part of their summer break. While this can be waived, players are usually encouraged to take it to ensure they have recovered for the new season ahead.
David Raya, Mikel Merino, Martin Zubimendi, William Saliba, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke and Declan Rice are all due to take part in World Cup semi-final matches this week. If any are eliminated, their expected return date would not be until after the pre-season friendly against Real Betis on August 5 in Dublin.
They would also miss the friendly against Girona on August 1. August 9, an Emirates Cup game against Borussia Dortmund, is Arsenal’s next fixture and the one where their non-injured players, who haven’t reached the final, are expected to return.
Of course, several players, including Rice, Saka and Saliba, have been dealing with fitness issues recently and could return later.

Bruno Guimaraes' dad goes public
Arsenal target Bruno Guimaraes’ dad has broken his silence following his son’s crucial penalty miss for Brazil at the World Cup. The Newcastle United star, who has reportedly told the Magpies he wants a move to north London this summer, missed a decisive spot-kick against Norway earlier this month.
The midfielder’s failure to find the net resulted in Martin Odegaard’s side recording a shock victory over Brazil in the round of 16. Dick Guimaraes posted a telling message about his son on Instagram days after Brazil’s elimination amid the rampant transfer links with Arsenal.
Translated from Portuguese, via Newcastle World, the post read: "You need courage to enter the arena and do what needs to be done. From the stands, it is very easy to give opinions."
Newcastle have insisted their captain, Guimaraes, is not for sale. Arsenal are understood to be weighing up an offer nonetheless, given Guimaraes has informed them he would like to join Arteta’s side.
