Jalmaro Calvin admits he felt like jumping on a flight back to Jamaica last season.
But the winger is refusing to jack it in after just one season in Scotland. And, with Craig McLeish now in charge, he’s confident he can be a St Mirren success.
Calvin signed last July but was frozen out by Stephen Robinson a long way from home.
The 23-year-old says fellow countryman Richard King was crucial in helping keep spirits up.
After his first competitive appearance for Saints in the romp over Dumbarton, Calvin said: “A few times it crept into my mind to go back home. But, as a kid, my dream was always to play in Europe.
“So I just had to hold onto a little bit of hope that it was going to get better.
“Richard King helped me through it. He always told me that my time would come. Now I want to play as much as I can, score some goals and find that love back for the game.
“It was very hard at first. Then I realised that it’s just a development, a stage in life. Mostly, it was just the weather at first. Then the gameplan wasn’t suited much to my style.
“This season is different because we’re under different management. It will be way better.”
There were no signs of settling-in struggles for Samuel Ramos. The Spaniard scored twice and assisted in sub Thomas Falconer’s late fourth goal.
Chris Mochrie scored the other Saints goal as they began their trophy defence in style.
