Mohamed Salah’s immediate future was thrust back into the spotlight last week after Egypt’s heartbreaking exit from the FIFA World Cup at the hands of Argentina in the round of 16.
The Egyptian King gave everything on the biggest stage, but it ultimately wasn’t enough to stop a Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina side from advancing.
Despite the disappointment, Salah and the Egyptian squad were welcomed home as heroes back in their country.
The country has rallied behind Salah throughout the tournament, and that pride has not dimmed one bit despite the disappointing exit.
Now, with the World Cup chapter closed and the emotion of the summer settling, the pressing question dominating football circles is where does Mo Salah go next? The 34-year-old left Liverpool at the end of last season as a free agent.
The latest suitor has emerged from an unexpected corner of the football world. Sporting Kansas City of Major League Soccer have reportedly entered the race, keen to pull off what would be one of the biggest signings in MLS history.
Now Simon Jones of the Daily Mail has reported:
“Mo Salah is wanted by Sporting Kansas City in the MLS.”
“The Egyptian is a free agent after leaving Liverpool and he and his representative Ramy Abbas are assessing options which are continuing to arrive from Saudi Arabia’s Pro-League and Europe.”
“Kansas have made their pitch with a lucrative two-year offer.”
However, the club themselves reportedly acknowledge it may still be a long shot, given the level of competition from Saudi and European clubs also circling. The next few weeks promise to be decisive.
Sporting Kansas’ new majority owner Peter Mallouk, whose parents are Egyptian immigrants, could also be a factor in the club’s pursuit of the Liverpool legend.
