Liverpool FC Women have been proactive after a season spent uncomfortably close to the wrong end of the Women’s Super League table.
Gareth Taylor’s side hovered around a relegation battle for much of last year before pulling clear late on, but the warning signs were clear enough to prompt a reset.
That reset has already seen the arrivals of Slovenia international centre-back Sara Agrež from Cologne and Germany forward Vivien Endemann from Wolfsburg.
Liverpool have also secured a deal for 20-year-old full-back Mari Ward on a free transfer from Bristol City.
But now there are exits on the cards after Reds goalkeeper Rafaela Borggräfe extended her loan deal at Bayer Leverkusen last week.
Republic of Ireland international Denise O’Sullivan is set to leave Liverpool just six months after joining the club in January 2026 according to the BBC.
The 32-year-old midfielder signed from North Carolina Courage in a club-record deal worth around £300,000. It was the highest fee Liverpool Women had ever paid for a player at the time, surpassing the £210,000 they spent on Olivia Smith in 2024.
She made nine WSL appearances for Liverpool and played a role in helping the club avoid relegation last season. However, personal reasons are understood to be behind her desire to return to the United States.
Defending NWSL champions Gotham FC are finalising a deal to bring O’Sullivan to New Jersey on an initial one-year loan with an obligation to buy.
Gotham would eventually pay Liverpool €350,000 for the midfielder, meaning the club would recoup their club-record outlay in full. The deal structure would see O’Sullivan’s contract run through the 2029 NWSL season, with an option for 2030.
The BBC adds that talks are progressing positively and the deal is expected to get over the line.
The 32-year-old will take plenty of experience with her having earned 132 caps for the Republic of Ireland.
