The Arsenal-Morgan Rogers story seems to be one of the biggest news in this summer transfer window. The Premier League champions want to improve their attack before the new season. However, there are still a few big steps to complete before any deal can happen.
Morgan Rogers is still Arsenal’s main target
The Gunners are still trying to sign Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers. The England international is seen as one of Mikel Arteta’s top targets because he can play in several attacking positions. As reported by Football365, Arsenal have made good progress in talks with the player’s camp. The report says there is an agreement in principle over a long-term contract. However, no transfer has been completed yet.
As reported by GIVEMESPORT, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano says Rogers remains Arsenal’s top choice for the left wing. Romano added that talks with the player’s representatives are moving in the right direction. The biggest problem is still reaching an agreement with Aston Villa.
Rogers is currently with England at the FIFA World Cup. Because of that, any major talks are expected to continue after his international duty ends. Arsenal like his ability to play on either wing and as an attacking midfielder. That versatility makes him an attractive option for Arteta.
Morgan Rogers’ stats for Aston Villa this season, as per FOTMOB:
Competitions Matches Goals Assists Pass Accuracy (%)
Premier League 37 10 6 75
FA Cup 2 1 0 76
EFL Cup 1 0 0 –
Europa League 15 3 5 77
Villa are holding firm on their price
Although Arsenal are believed to have the player’s interest, agreeing a transfer fee is proving much harder. As reported by Football365, Aston Villa value Rogers at around £130 million. The club see him as one of their most important players after his strong performances. Reports suggest Arsenal could begin with an offer closer to £100 million, but both clubs are still some distance apart.
As reported by TEAMtalk, Arsenal are preparing an opening bid after making Rogers one of their main summer targets. So far, there is no sign that Villa are ready to lower their asking price. As reported by ESPN, Rogers remains one of Arsenal’s leading attacking targets as the club looks to add more quality in wide areas before the new season begins.
Other transfer plans may shape Arsenal’s summer
Rogers is not the only player on Arsenal’s shortlist. The club are also targeting Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães as Arteta looks to strengthen more than one area of his squad. As reported by Football365, Arsenal’s chances of completing both deals could depend on player sales and the final transfer fees. Spending a huge amount on Rogers may affect how much money is left for other signings.
For now, Arsenal and Aston Villa have not reached an agreement. Talks are expected to continue once Rogers returns from the football World Cup. Until then, both clubs are keeping the deal open as they make the key decisions needed to complete the transfer.
Author’s Opinion
Rogers looks like a strong fit for Arsenal because he can play in different attacking roles. The only real question is the price. If both clubs can find a middle ground, this could become one of the biggest Premier League transfers of the summer.
