Newcastle United are enduring a disaster of a transfer window so far, with the loss of major stars Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali and Arsenal are keen on Bruno Guimaraes. However, the mire worsened even further over the weekend after Aston Villa hijacked a move for Johan Manzambi.

The Swiss international had looked destined for St James’ Park with a fee and personal terms agreed, but the final sign-off was yet to come. It has since emerged that this reluctance to commit to the deal was due to the preference for Champions League football, which Villa have now offered, much encouraged after the injury to Amadou Onana at the World Cup.

Think Eberechi Eze delaying the move to Tottenham Hotspur only for Arsenal to come in, buoyed by the injury to Kai Havertz, and snapping up the attacking midfielder despite the switch to Spurs looking almost done. For Arsenal, this has raised questions, however, about Newcastle’s willingness to sell Guimaraes.

The Magpies have already secured 18-year-old midfielder Seun Stauer from Ajax. Who, despite his young age, is understood to be seen as a senior option for Eddie Howe.

football.london understands that Arsenal keen on the prospect of bringing Guimaraes coming to North London. The club is working on the first official offer to Newcastle, with both the player and the North London club keen to see a resolution before pre-season begins in August.

Newcastle are believed to have alternatives to Manzambi, despite losing out on their primary midfield target. Botafogo midfielder Danilo is one name mentioned, although other Premier League clubs are also keen, so we could see another transfer drama with Newcastle unfold again…

Regarding Villa, the West Midlands club already had some financial pressure following their sanction by UEFA for breaches of financial fair play rules, and now have committed €70million (£60million) to the deal for Manzambi.

Ensuring money comes in regarding player sales, therefore, remains key. Villa are expected to bank £35million from the sale of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, who they were reluctant to sell and will now need to replace, requiring further investment.

With that said, Arsenal’s interest in Morgan Rogers is the clear link and despite claims of a £130million asking price, Arsenal hope to close a deal much lower than this. If Villa make further sales with Lucas Digne and Ezri Konsa linked with moves, this could complicate matters regarding Rogers and give Villa far more foundation to try and hold onto their prized asset.
