Kyran Thompson is set to join Newcastle United in the near future after he agreed a move, as reported by Scouting Indoors and Fabrizio Romano.
Thompson is currently technically a free agent after his Arsenal schoolboy contract expired at the end of June.
It was initially anticipated that the youngster would sign scholarship and subsequently professional terms with Arsenal but that ultimately didn’t transpire.
Previously part of Arsenal’s Hale End academy when he was very young, Thompson joined West Ham before returning to Arsenal as an U15 player.
During his U16 year last season Thompson was effectively an U18 player, featuring in the vast majority of matches for that age group, while he also received opportunities at higher levels which included featuring for the U19s, making his U21s debut and training with the first-team.
It has emerged (via the player’s father @KentEliteScouting) that a key factor behind Thompson’s move to Newcastle was his desire to play regularly in his favoured position as a right winger.
Last season Thompson received opportunities in that position for Arsenal U18s but there were also many occasions when he was deployed as a central striker, which may well not bring the best out of him.
The England U17 international, who had also been linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur, is a very good prospect with impressive technical ability and it is a shame that Arsenal haven’t managed to secure his future.
Attention will now turn to Arsenal’s development of the players who are still at the club, with an announcement regarding next season’s scholarship intake set to be made shortly.
