Chelsea have made contact over Bologna forward Jonathan Rowe, as per latest transfer news. The Blues are looking to add width to their attack this summer.

Chelsea open talks for Bologna winger Jonathan Rowe

Chelsea have reopened talks with representatives of the 23-year-old winger Jonathan Rowe. As reported by ESPN, no formal offer has yet landed on Bologna’s desk, though the London club have again placed Rowe near the top of their shortlist. West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville, as well as Francisco Trincao, has also been mentioned as an alternative, showing Chelsea are weighing several names rather than fixing on one target.

Bologna face a tricky situation of their own. The club have missed out on European football for next season for the first time in three years, and that absence could soften their stance on a sale. They still value Rowe highly and see no pressure to sell him cheaply, though interest from Chelsea and Aston Villa means a departure cannot be ruled out.

Rowe’s stats in the 2025-26 season, as per FOTMOB:

Competitions Matches Goals Assists Successful dribbles Chances created

Serie A 28 3 2 49 21

Coppa Italia 1 1 0 4 1

Europa League 12 4 2 15 21

Goals, guile and growing reputation

As per FOTMOB, he finished last season with eight goals and four assists in 41 games for Bologna. Those are solid numbers for a winger who is still new to Serie A football. Only a handful of Serie A wingers created more chances from open play than Rowe last season. Rowe arrived in Italy after a short spell at Marseille. He came through Norwich City’s academy in the Championship before moving on.

His style on the ball shows why clubs like Chelsea rate him highly. Rowe likes to cut inside from either wing at good pace. He also carries the ball well and beats defenders one on one. Unai Emery praised his display after Bologna faced Aston Villa in Europe. He also scored a late winner against Napoli last season, showing real composure in a big moment.

Rowe’s £40m question: Squad filler or genuine upgrade?

A move to England would carry real symbolic weight too. Rowe grew up close to London, so a move would feel like a return home. Bologna have a record of selling to English clubs like Arsenal and Manchester United. This suggests Bologna would accept a strong offer rather than dig in.

This deal looks sensible on paper, but it carries financial risk. As reported by BBC, Bologna currently value Rowe at close to €40 million, that is a big fee for a player who may start as squad depth. He would sit behind Chelsea’s first choice attackers early on. Recent struggles from wide players like Alejandro Garnacho and Jamie Gittens stand out which explains why Chelsea want to upgrade their options wide.

Rowe’s directness could offer the team something fresh going forward. Any deal would also need to fit within Chelsea’s spending limits under Premier League profit and sustainability rules, which have shaped their recent transfer business. Even so, price and role on the pitch must match well. If Chelsea see him as backup cover, the fee gets harder to justify. That is especially true against other transfer priorities this summer. If they view him as a long term starter, the investment makes more sense. Chelsea’s next move on Rowe should make their plan clear.
