Arsenal get a big boost regarding the signature of their£100m target

Julian Alvarez to Arsenal: Atletico open the door but slam it shut on Spanish rivals

Julian Alvarez to Arsenal: Diego Simeone’s side have made their position textbook clear. Atletico Madrid‘s preference is to sell Julian Alvarez to either Arsenal or Paris Saint-Germain should he leave this summer. That stance hands Mikel Arteta’s side a massive strategic advantage as this transfer saga hits its sharpest point yet.

Reports from TEAMtalk suggest Atletico have explicitly told Alvarez’s camp that a move to North London carries their full approval. They are utterly determined not to strengthen either Barcelona or their city rivals, Real Madrid. The route to the Emirates, which looked highly improbable just weeks ago, suddenly looks the most viable path for all parties.

Diego Simeone’s hierarchy at the Metropolitano has been particularly aggravated by what they perceive as public campaigns from the two Spanish giants to unsettle the player. They shut the door hard. Real Madrid found that out after seeing a €150 million bid rejected out of hand by Atleti. Barcelona tried an approach involving Ferran Torres plus cash for the 26-year-old, but Atletico kicked that out too.

Brutal. Decisive. Spanish radio station COPE reported that Atletico are refusing to negotiate with Barcelona and are instead actively working with the Gunners on a deal. The Metropolitano chiefs have effectively chosen their buyer. They just need a fee that works.

The numbers game and a familiar face at the table

Any deal for Alvarez is expected to exceed £100 million. Barcelona would currently struggle to structure a package capable of matching Atletico’s demands outright anyway. Arsenal, meanwhile, have been reluctant to go past a £90 million valuation for the Argentine international. The gap is small, but bridging it cleanly is proving tricky. Sources confirmed that Atletico have informed Arsenal they would consider taking one or even two players as part of the deal. Arsenal have already suggested several options, including Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard.

Alvarez himself isn’t hiding his intentions. He stated in June that he spoke with people at the club and that the best thing for everyone is a transfer to fulfil his dream. He added that it was not the time to talk about it, but he also could not hide it. Refreshingly candid.

In the 2025/26 La Liga season, Alvarez made 29 appearances for Atletico, accumulating 1,904 minutes and scoring eight goals, also registering four assists. Those numbers look modest on the surface, but his previous campaign told a much fuller story. Alvarez played 37 La Liga games the year before, scored 17 goals and provided four assists. Across his entire time at the Metropolitano, he has scored 49 goals in 106 games.

He boasts valuable Premier League experience, having played for Manchester City between 2022 and 2024, where he won two Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy. Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta knows Atletico inside out too. He worked at Atletico for 12 years before moving to the Emirates last summer, which may prove the most underrated factor in this whole negotiation.

Scorzo’s opinion:

Arteta wants the deal done before pre-season training begins on 20 July. There are very few days left to get this across the line. Sources close to Alvarez’s camp have made it clear they will not allow the striker to become trapped in a prolonged transfer saga stretching across the entire summer.

This situation suits Arsenal more than any other club involved. Atletico don’t want to sell to Spain. PSG cooled. Barcelona can’t fund it cleanly. That leaves Arteta’s side with a clear run, and they have got a sporting director who has Atletico’s number on speed dial. The fee is the sticking point, but player-plus-cash deals have bridged larger gaps before.

If Berta structures this cleverly and Atletico’s board fancies the idea of moving Viktor Gyokeres to Madrid, this can happen quickly. Alvarez at the Emirates would be genuinely thrilling. He is a footballer of rare intelligence, work rate and big-game instinct who has already proved himself in this league.
