The biggest newspapers in Argentina are offering a local view of how Arsenal’s pursuit of Julián Álvarez could develop… But only after the World Cup.
The reports from La Nación and Clarín Deportivo do not present Arsenal as leading the race or making an immediate move.
What Argentine newspapers say about Arsenal
According to La Nación, Arsenal intend to intensify their efforts once Álvarez has finished his international commitments with Argentina.
The newspaper does not suggest that the Gunners are currently leading negotiations. Instead, it says they remain involved and expect the transfer picture to become clearer after the tournament.
La Nación report that Barcelona remain Álvarez’s preferred destination. Atlético Madrid continue to resist a sale and point to his unattainable €500m (£426m) release clause.
The Argentine outlet also says Arsenal could increase their activity after the World Cup. They say only after the tournament end is when Álvarez will be “free to focus fully on his club future”.
Barcelona act while Arsenal monitor
Clarín Deportivo offer a similar picture from Argentina. They say Barcelona are currently trying to construct the financial operation required to sign Álvarez.
The Catalan club must find a way around Atlético’s demands, while Diego Simeone continues to treat the forward as an essential player.
However, Clarín describe Arsenal as “following every movement”. The wording suggests the Gunners are watching Barcelona’s attempts rather than forcing the issue themselves at this stage.
In the end, looks like the Argentines see Arsenal as a powerful alternative if Barcelona fail to turn the player’s preference into an agreement.
