The 18-year-old’s contract expired at the end of last month, and the Blues will have to pay a certain amount of compensation due to his age:

Bettoni is unlikely to become part of Xabi Alonso’s first-team squad, but he already has some experience of senior football.

What do Chelsea fans need to know about the player?

Bettoni came through Wigan’s youth ranks, having moved from Curzon Ashton in 2019. After six years with the Latics, he was handed his first-team debut against Salford in the EFL Trophy in September last year.

The teenager then made a massive impact on his first league appearance a couple of months later, scoring a brace off the bench, which sealed a 2-1 win versus AFC Wimbledon.

Bettoni ended up making 27 appearances in all competitions for Wigan last campaign, scoring 4 goals in total. He is usually deployed as a no.10, but he can be used as a false nine.

He will be Chelsea’s 6th summer signing

Heading into the summer transfer window, the Blues had already agreed deals for the likes of Sporting Lisbon’s Geovany Quenda, Strasbourg’s Emmanuel Emegha, Kairat Almaty’s Dastan Satpaev and Corinthians’ Denner.

Following Xabi Alonso’s appointment as manager, there has been one further arrival – Atalanta’s Marco Palestra, and it appears Bettoni will be the 6th player to be purchased in total.

There could well be a 7th on the way if the club can find an agreement with Rayo Vallecano for Pep Chavarria. A second bid worth €25m (£21.3m) is set to be lodged.
