Arsenal are expected to spend a record amount this summer if they are successful in signing players in all the positions they’re planning for. Mikel Arteta would like to both replace and upgrade in a number of key positions to help defend his side’s status as Premier League champions.

The forward line is an imperative place for investment, particularly the left-hand side, although centre-forward remains a position of interest. The other key area concerns central midfield.

With that said, football.london takes a look at all the players heavily linked with a move this summer and discusses what we realistically predict a transfer fee for the player is likely to be, the reasons behind a move and context too.

It is important to stress that these are predictions based on the theory of what is known at the time of writing. They are not indicators of any offers that have been made, nor what is known clubs would be willing to either offer or accept.

Julian Alvarez - £100million-£110m

No doubt the Argentinian is a dream option of Mikel Arteta’s who is understood to see the player as a level-raiser for the club. However, Atletico Madrid’s stance has complicated the situation.

Alvarez wants to leave, but his desire beyond all else is Barcelona. Atleti do not want to sell to a La Liga rival and have been very public in defending their position in the case of Alvarez.

Although Atletico rejected a €150m (£129m) offer from Real Madrid, ironically, it could be a figure lower than that that swings it for a club like Arsenal. Certainly, Atletico would rather Alvarez went back to England, and that is in the Gunners’ favour.

The Gunners would ideally not want any fee to exceed £100m, but considering just how much Arteta is thought to like the player, like with Declan Rice, the club might just do what it takes to get it done in terms of a fee, within reason.

But nothing is happening without the green light from the player, which is the biggest obstacle. Plus, there is the matter of Viktor Gyokeres, who Atletico could yet see as a potential replacement for Alvarez, only complicating matters further.

Bruno Guimaraes - £70m-£80m

So much has been said with so little actually happening. What do we know so far?

Arsenal are interested in Bruno Guimaraes. Bruno Guimaraes is interested in joining Arsenal. Newcastle United do not want to sell and have so far not received any official offers as yet from the Gunners.

It is understood that, via intermediaries, a £45m verbal offer was floated, which was batted away instantly. The sense is that the final cost for Guimaraes will likely exceed £65m, a figure that should not put Arsenal off for one of the league’s best central midfielders.

Newcastle are in a desperate situation this window, considering the number of players who have either left the club or are transfer targets moving elsewhere. Losing Guimaraes looks almost inevitable, with the player making it known he wants to leave, but to save as much face as possible, no doubt Newcastle will command a seriously high fee.

Bradley Barcola - £100-£110m

PSG are reportedly adamant that they do not want to let Bradley Barcola leave. The problem appears to be that while they continue to look to add more threat in Yan Diomande and Maghnes Akliouche, contact talks with Barcola have not progressed leading to a sense that he could leave.

If he were to go, suggestions are that PSG want more than what Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson. Is he worth that? No for me.

Is he worth more than £100m? Not for me, either, but I do think if Arsenal want to sign him, that is what they will have to pay.

Morgan Rogers - £100m-£110m

The big £130m asking price from Aston Villa is ridiculous, if indeed true. Rogers is a fantastic footballer, and looks like a great investment.

While Villa were fined by UEFA for breaches of Financial Fair Play rules, they have now managed to sell some players with Youri Tielemans and Lucas Digne expected to go. Donyell Malen and Enzo Barrenechea have also been sold on too but there is an understanding more funds are needed to aid the club’s situation.

They’ve committed close to £60m for Johan Manzambi too, and with Tielemans leaving, will be expected to reinvest again. I think this will aid Arsenal’s position in negotiations but Villa will demand a potential record-breaking fee from the Gunners to get it done.

Conclusion

There is a real chance in my mind Arsenal could spend over £100m on more than one player in this window, based on both what players they want and the expected demands of the club they play for. For me, if it turned out Arsenal were landing Guimaraes, Rogers and Alvarez alongside a full-back this summer, it would go down as one of the best, if not the best, windows ever.
