Liverpool could be set to save millions if Arne Slot becomes the Netherlands’ new manager, with the Reds claimed to have given their blessing for their former boss to take up a new role.
Slot is of course out of work after being fired by Liverpool earlier this summer, after what was a disappointing second season in charge when the Reds failed to win a trophy and only just secured Champions League qualification by finishing fifth.
The 47-year-old has since been replaced by Andoni Iraola, who will meet the majority of his new squad over the coming days as he gets down to work in pre-season.
Slot though may not have to wait too long for his next job. He has been linked with the Netherlands job, with Ronald Koeman having resigned following the country’s early exit at the World Cup.
Slot is the favorite to be handed the role, with some reports claiming that he is already in talks with the Dutch football association.
Taking on a new job so soon after leaving a club would usually mean the manager misses out on any remaining payments owed him, but Liverpool is claimed to have come to an agreement with Slot which will mean he doesn’t miss out, while also saving the Reds millions.

According to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, rather than paying Slot’s severance package in one lump sum, Liverpool has chosen to go down the same path as most other teams by placing him on gardening leave, which sees the club paying him monthly for the remainder of his contract.
Slot still had a year remaining on his deal at Anfield when he was dismissed, and is reported to have been earning around $9 million during his first year with the club before earning a pay rise after leading Liverpool to the Premier League title.

By taking on a new job before the end of his Liverpool contract, Slot could have found himself in a position where he would have to forfeit the remaining payments owed to him. De Telegraaf points to the case of Louis van Gaal’s firing at Manchester United, when he didn’t take on another job until receiving all of his remaining payments from the Old Trafford club, having felt he was entitled to them.
Liverpool though is said to have come to an agreement which will see the club top up Slot’s potential salary during his first year with the Netherlands to the amount he would have been owed by the Reds. This would save the club millions, while also maintaining its good relationship with Slot.

It’s suggested that Slot behaved “very properly” with Liverpool after it was confirmed to him that he would be fired, while his title win in the first year also worked in his favor, with the Reds effectively giving him the go-ahead to take the top job with his country.
