Arsenal star being rushed back for World Cup semi-final despite fitness concerns

Declan Rice is expected to recover in time to start England’s World Cup semi-final against Argentina despite continuing to feel the effects of a sickness bug.

The Arsenal midfielder was withdrawn at half-time during England’s 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway after spending much of the previous three days in bed.

Thomas Tuchel later revealed that Rice had been badly affected by the illness, which is believed to have been picked up during England’s stay in Mexico.

However, the 27-year-old has improved considerably since the quarter-final and is now considered likely to retain his place in midfield on Wednesday.

England’s medical staff will continue to assess him before making a final decision, but there is growing confidence that he will be ready to start alongside Elliot Anderson.

Rice is also expected to declare himself available given the significance of the occasion and his importance to Tuchel’s side.

The former West Ham United captain has started all but one of England’s matches at the tournament, missing only the group-stage victory over Panama.

His workload has already required careful management because of a neural problem affecting his lower back and hamstring.

Rice has played through that discomfort for much of the World Cup and again showed his determination by starting against Norway despite being short of full fitness.

England eventually progressed after extra time, setting up a high-profile semi-final against the reigning world champions in Atlanta.

Tuchel will be relieved by the midfielder’s improvement because Rice remains central to England’s defensive structure and ability to control possession.

The Three Lions also have decisions to make elsewhere in the team.

Ezri Konsa is expected to be available after suffering cramp against Norway, while Reece James could return to the starting line-up after featuring from the bench.

Bukayo Saka is also pushing for a recall after making a strong impact as a substitute in the quarter-final.

England will need Rice’s experience against an Argentina side built around Lionel Messi and supported by several technically gifted midfielders.

The Arsenal star’s ability to protect the defence, win second balls and carry possession through pressure could prove decisive.

His expected return will also reassure Arsenal supporters, although the amount of football he has played while managing both illness and pain remains a concern ahead of the new club season.

For now, England’s focus is solely on Wednesday’s semi-final.

Unless Rice suffers a setback before kick-off, he is expected to take his place in midfield as the Three Lions attempt to reach a second World Cup final.
