Arsenal are in a stronger position to dictate Kepa Arrizabalaga’s future after the release clause in the goalkeeper’s contract expired during the current transfer window.
The Spain international joined the Gunners from Chelsea last summer after Arsenal activated a £5 million release clause, arriving to compete with David Raya following another busy campaign under Mikel Arteta.
Although Raya has remained Arsenal’s first-choice goalkeeper, Kepa has made valuable contributions whenever called upon and played his part as the Gunners secured the Premier League title.
Interest in the 31-year-old has continued to grow this summer, with several clubs monitoring his situation as they look to strengthen their goalkeeping options.
However, any potential suitor must now negotiate directly with Arsenal if they want to complete a deal.
The release clause that allowed Kepa to leave for a fixed £5 million fee has now expired, meaning Arsenal are no longer obliged to sanction a transfer at that price.
Instead, the Premier League champions are free to negotiate their own valuation if formal offers arrive.
The development comes shortly after Arsenal strengthened their goalkeeping department by completing the signing of Illan Meslier.
The Frenchman joined on a free transfer following the expiry of his contract at Leeds United, bringing more than 200 senior appearances and significant Premier League experience to north London.
Meslier is expected to begin the new campaign as Arsenal’s third-choice goalkeeper behind Raya and Kepa.
His arrival also gives Arteta greater depth ahead of another season in which Arsenal will compete across the Premier League, Champions League and domestic cup competitions.
Despite the speculation, Arsenal are not believed to be actively looking to sell Kepa.
Instead, the club’s position is that they would consider an appropriate offer if the goalkeeper decided he wanted to pursue a move in search of more regular first-team football.
That leaves Arsenal firmly in control of any negotiations during the remainder of the transfer window.
The Gunners have consistently emphasised the importance of strong competition in every position, with Arteta preferring experienced options capable of stepping into the starting XI whenever required.
Kepa’s professionalism and experience have been valued throughout his first season at the Emirates Stadium, while Meslier’s arrival has further strengthened Arsenal’s options between the posts.
Whether Kepa remains in north London or moves elsewhere before the deadline, Arsenal are now under no pressure to sell and can negotiate from a position of strength if clubs decide to test their resolve with an official offer.
