Manchester United legend Paul Scholes says Arsenal should not hesitate if Julian Alvarez is available for £100m.

The Argentinian international is a long-term target for Mikel Arteta’s side, and speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes said that the Gunners should do all they can to sign the “match winner” this summer:

“If Atletico Madrid want £100m, any big club needs to go and get him. Just go and get him. There’s not even a debate. I don’t think there’s loads of top-class centre-forwards knocking about. I don’t see him as an out-and-out centre-forward, he’s more of a drifter.”

“Atletico Madrid won’t want to sell him to Real Madrid or Barcelona. If he’s £100m – [England midfielder] Elliot Anderson has just gone for £116m – and Alvarez is a match-winner. What a signing that would be.”

Doubts remain about Alvarez’s interest in moving to the Emirates

While it seems clear that the forward’s team, Atletico Madrid, would much prefer to offload him to Arsenal than their Spanish rivals, the player seems dead set on staying in La Liga.

Barcelona are said to be his dream destination, and it wouldn’t be wise for the Gunners to wait and hope that Alvarez changes his mind.

Who could Arsenal pursue instead?

Even though Alvarez would undoubtedly be Arteta’s preferred choice to strengthen the forward line, it looks like most of the club’s transfer funds will be devoted towards buying Morgan Rogers.

The fact that the 23-year-old is set to cost more than Alvarez does demonstrate how crazy the market is, especially when dealing with other English clubs.

However, the £116m that Man City paid for Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson has set a precedent, and Villa are currently holding out for a British record £130m. Sporting director Andrea Berta will be hoping to negotiate the price down slightly.
