Because of their failure to qualify for European football, Chelsea are going to play significantly fewer games this season than last season.
That means chopping their squad size down significantly, and they’ve made decent progress on that so far. Marc Cucurella went to Real Madrid last month. Andrey Santos joined Manchester United this week, and Alejandro Garnacho looks like he could go pretty soon. Trevoh Chalobah is also moving towards the exit.

There could be further departures. An obvious option to go would be Malo Gusto, mainly because the club have already effectively replaced him with their only senior addition of the summer so far – Marco Palestra from Atalanta.
CaughtOffside’s exclusive says that Malo Gusto is Man City’s “leading defensive target”, with Enzo Maresca’s team having offered €45m, while Chelsea hold out for €75m.
We can’t imagine that City would ever offer that much – but we also don’t believe that Chelsea wouldn’t actually accept something closer to €60m. The difference in valuations shows that there is still some way to go in these negotiations though, so don’t hope for a solution too soon.
Gusto is still at the World Cup with France, and things could accelerate quite a lot when he’s back.
In other news…
Also on the sales front, the club are extremely confident they can sell Alejandro Garnacho within the next two weeks – we’re not quite sure who will take him, but it’s all very promising.
