**Liverpool are reportedly monitoring an England international currently playing at the 2026 World Cup, but they may be behind one top club in the race.**
The Reds don’t have any players in the England squad at a major tournament, which is extremely rare, but Djed Spence has been mentioned as an option for them this summer.
The Tottenham full-back has enjoyed a good World Cup, and could feature in the semi-finals against Alexis Mac Allister’s Argentina on Wednesday evening.
According to [_TEAMtalk_](https://www.teamtalk.com/news/liverpool-newcastle-trailing-inter-hold-djed-spence-transfer-talks-tottenham-sale), Liverpool and Newcastle United are “both monitoring developments and remain attentive” to the Spence’s current situation.
That said, Inter Milan have emerged as strong contenders to sign him ahead of the 2026/27 season, and the Serie A champions have “entered the picture” and “spoken” with his representatives. Not only that, but a move there “appeals” to the Englishman.
**Would Djed Spence thrive in a Liverpool shirt?**
--------------------------------------------------
Spence’s stock has arguably risen because of strong performances at the World Cup, with his pace a potent weapon and his ability to play at both right-back and left-back proving invaluable.
The 25-year-old hasn’t always been the most consistent, but his importance to England this summer isn’t lost on captain [Harry Kane](https://www.spurs-web.com/spurs-news/harry-kane-hails-tottenhams-outstanding-djed-spence-ahead-of-englands-semifinal-clash/), who has lauded him and other fringe players in recent days:
_“That is when you need the squad the most. Sometimes it is easy to think you have a set team for this stage of the tournament, but it is never the case. You have suspensions and injuries and hidden fatigue, and that is when you need the players the most. The guys who maybe haven’t got the minutes they would have liked, this is when they need to step up in these moments. The guys that came on were outstanding.”_
Spence would make sense for Liverpool in plenty of ways, coming in at a good age and being able to impress on either flank, combining speed with strong one-on-one defensive skills.
The above report states that he isn’t seen as part of Roberto De Zerbi’s plans at Spurs, and while that may be a boost for Liverpool, it also could suggest there are issues in his game.
But if Andoni Iraola sees Spence as someone who could excel under him, and he doesn’t cost too much, there is plenty to admire about him as a footballer.
