What Chelsea’s summer plans for goalkeepers tell you about Blues’ transfer idea

Chelsea are not on the hunt for a first choice goalkeeper this summer, according to the latest reports on the situation.

This week’s Chelsea Files at the Sun has a section on the Blues’ goalkeeper situation.

But what it says is less interesting than what it doesn’t say.

The piece claims that the club are “calling around looking for an experienced third choice keeper,” with “veteran English stoppers who are out of contract” targeted.

This is of course to pull the classic trick of using a homegrown third choice keeper to help comply with squad registration rules.

But what the piece very much doesn’t say is that the Blues are looking for a new first choice stopper. There certainly have been no rumours to have effect.

It seems that Robert Sanchez will remain first choice, while Mike Penders stays as backup. The young Belgian will be developed to compete with Sanchez long term, and we’d be surprised if by the end of the coming campaign he hasn’t put the senior man under serious pressure, and possibly taken the job.

Filip Jorgensen has asked to leave, and will be sold when we get a reasonable offer.

In other news…

Chelsea are selling a lot of players this summer, but they also have a group of stars they won’t sell at any price. Two new names are now on that list.

Malo Gusto has been linked to Man City all summer – but the difference in valuation between what they’re offering and what Chelsea want remains a major stumbling block.
