Roma could be forced to reconsider the future of Arsenal target Manu Koné after head coach Gian Piero Gasperini admitted the Serie A club may need to sell players this summer to balance their finances.
Koné has been linked with a move to the Premier League in recent weeks, with ARSENAL among the clubs reportedly monitoring the France international as they continue to assess midfield reinforcements ahead of the new season.
Although Roma would ideally like to retain the winger, Gasperini has acknowledged the club’s financial position could ultimately determine their transfer strategy:”It is undeniable that Roma have to balance the books.
“I hope that reaching the Champions League will be enough [to keep Kone], but it is clear that balance sheets are essential for clubs, and there will be more clarity in the coming weeks.”
Arsenal are believed to admire Koné’s profile as Mikel Arteta continues to refine his squad for another campaign challenging on multiple fronts. The Gunners have been linked with a number of midfielders during the window, with the club seeking players capable of adding both quality and depth to an already competitive squad.
While there has been no confirmation that ARSENAL have submitted a formal offer, reports in Italy suggest Roma would listen to significant bids if they are required to generate funds before the transfer deadline.
Despite the financial realities, Roma’s preference remains to keep Koné as part of Gasperini’s long-term plans.
The midfielder is viewed as an important component of the coach’s tactical system, and his departure would leave the club with a sizeable gap to fill in the centre of the pitch.
