Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes continues to be linked with a transfer to Arsenal. The Brazil international remained a consistent performer last season despite the Magpies' struggles as they finished 12th in the Premier League table.

Guimaraes has followed that up with four assists at the World Cup for Brazil, but his penalty miss in the last-16 defeat to Norway proved pivotal. His focus will now be on the upcoming campaign but that may not be at St James' Park, with playing in the Champions League likely a priority.

Recent departures for Alexander Isak, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon have also furthered the likelihood of Guimaraes also moving on. The Gunners have been admirers of the 28-year-old ever since his move to Newcastle from Lyon back in January of 2022.

With all of that being said, football.london has taken a look at the the latest updates on Guimaraes' transfer from both Newcastle and Arsenal's perspective.

Transfer green light

Guimaraes has given Arsenal the green light to sign him having informed Newcastle of his desire to leave, according to The Athletic.

Eddie Howe's side do not want to sell their captain but could be forced to given his demands. However, he is not expected to force a move, like Alexander Isak did last summer when Liverpool came knocking.

Gunners contact

While there has been no contact between the two clubs, Arsenal have spoken with Guimaraes' representatives and agreed on personal terms.

A £60million bid was floated through intermediaries with Newcastle firmly declining and have remained adamant he is not for sale.

£100m demand

Despite that, every club arguably has their price with Newcastle unsurprisingly not wanting anything less for Guimaraes than what they received for Sandro Tonali.

Sandro Tonali was sold by Newcastle for £100million

Tottenham paid £100million to sign him and that is their asking price for Guimaraes as per talkSPORT. Newcastle paid £40m to sign him and are therefore looking for a sizeable profit.

Staveley talks

Ex-Newcastle United co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi has responded to a claim that Arsenal were of the belief they could pay just £50m to sign Guimaraes after a conversation with Amanda Staveley.

Having failed to qualify for the Champions League, it was claimed by The Telegraph that co-owner Amanda Staveley informed intermediaries that Guimaraes could be available for a fee of £50m.

However, they wrote: "Staveley categorically denied the conversation took place when approached by Telegraph Sport."

Newcastle transfer problems

It has already been a challenging summer for Newcastle both with regard to incomings and outgoings. On the latter, Tonali and Gordon have been sold while two deals were hijacked at the eleventh hour.

Liverpool swooped in late for Victor Munoz at the start of the World Cup and the tournament's breakout star Johan Manzambi has since opted to join Aston Villa instead.

Newcastle have completed some signings but have lost out on several top targets which doesn't bode well with Guimaraes unlikely to be happy at the ambition they are showing and the fact some players are heading elsewhere.
