Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has been covering the World Cup for WhoScored this summer, but he’s managed to put quite a Chelsea spin on things.

This week he’s been speaking about a key England player who is out of contract, and he claims Chelsea should snap up. John Stones almost came to Stamford Bridge long ago, but ended up making the move to Man City, where he had great success for a decade.

Now he’s out of contract, and JFH thinks the Blues should be all over the veteran central defender.

“I would love to see him [Alonso] go and get [John] Stones, who is a free agent. Everybody will say: ‘oh, but he’s injured a lot.’ I think this year he will be a very good buy for Chelsea because Chelsea doesn’t play in the Champions League or in Europe, so it’s from Saturday to Saturday.”

That is a very good point – Stones could be used very sparingly, and even when he’s not in the team his experience would be helping the whole squad.

Xabi Alonso did an interview with Sky Sports today where he explained how excited he was to work with one Chelsea player in particular.

This time a year ago Chelsea were still chasing Mike Maignan – right now, it seems their plans in goal have changed significantly.
