Despite the disappointing numbers, Washington believes a healthier roster and schematic changes can help unlock the version of Luvu that dominated in 2024. New defensive coordinator Daronte Jones should deploy Luvu primarily as an off-ball linebacker again. The arrival of first-round pick Sonny Styles also gives the Commanders another versatile second-level defender.
Luvu enters the final year of his three-year, $31 million contract. He now has every incentive to prove that his dip was an anomaly rather than a sign of decline. Luvu's rise to NFL prominence has been built on perseverance. After going undrafted in 2018, he earned his opportunity with the New York Jets before breaking out with the Carolina Panthers. Luvu posted consecutive seasons with more than 110 tackles. That production earned him a lucrative deal with Washington. He immediately rewarded the organization with a Second-Team All-Pro campaign and a career-high 8.0 sacks in 2024. Now, Luvu remains the emotional leader of the Commanders' defense. He and will look to reestablish himself among the NFL's elite linebackers in 2026.
