Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has confirmed that the club is assessing the future of Alejandro Garnacho, with the Argentine winger’s long-term place at Stamford Bridge now under serious consideration.
Garnacho only arrived at Chelsea one year ago after leaving Manchester United in a high-profile move, but uncertainty has quickly emerged over whether he will remain part of Alonso’s plans.
The Blues are understood to be reviewing their attacking options as they look to build a squad capable of competing for major honours, and Garnacho’s situation has become one of the key talking points.
Speaking about the winger’s future, Alonso admitted that Garnacho remains a player of interest but suggested that no final decision has been made. The Chelsea boss is believed to be evaluating every member of his squad, with performances, tactical suitability and long-term value all factors in determining who stays and who leaves.
“The situation is we have spoken with the sports directors, and there’s an interest in him from other clubs. So let’s see how it develops, but hopefully it finishes in the best possible ways for all parties,” Alonso told reporters, in comments carried by The Telegraph.
Garnacho arrived at CHELSEA with a reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting young attackers. His pace, direct running and ability to create chances made him a highly sought-after talent during his time at Manchester United. However, consistency has been a major issue, and his time at Chelsea has not yet produced the impact many expected.
The Argentine has shown flashes of quality but has struggled to establish himself as an automatic starter. Chelsea’s attacking department is becoming increasingly competitive, with Alonso demanding more tactical discipline, defensive contribution and decision-making from his wide players.
Opinion: Why Garnacho Needs to Leave Chelsea
The winger still has significant potential, but Chelsea cannot afford to carry players who are not delivering consistently at the highest level. Garnacho’s biggest weakness has been his decision-making in the final third. Too often, promising attacking situations have broken down because of rushed choices, poor final passes or an over-reliance on individual moments.
Under Alonso, CHELSEA are expected to operate with greater structure and control. Wide players must contribute beyond scoring goals; they need to understand positioning, pressing triggers and the importance of maintaining team balance. Garnacho has struggled to fully adapt to those demands.
A fresh start could allow him to rediscover the confidence and freedom that made him such an exciting prospect at Manchester United. Chelsea, meanwhile, could reinvest funds from his departure into a winger who better fits Alonso’s tactical vision.
