Newcastle United want to keep Bruno Guimaraes but have reportedly identified a replacement in case he joins Arsenal.
Newcastle United are looking at other midfield targets after missing out on the signing of Freiberg and Switzerland midfielder Johan Manzambi to Premier League rivals Aston Villa.
The Magpies had a £49million agreement in place with Freiberg but were told by Manzambi’s camp that a transfer couldn’t be finalised until his participation at the World Cup was over.
Eddie Howe’s side hoped to close out a deal this week after Switzerland exited the competition following a quarter-final defeat to Argentina on Sunday. However, little under 24 hours later, it was revealed that Manzambi had opted to join Champions League-competing Villa instead.
Newcastle suspected the 20-year-old was keeping his options open, so the news wasn’t met with the level of surprise that Victor Munoz’s move to Liverpool was.
United are understood to have already moved on to other targets. Here are the latest transfer rumours doing the rounds:
Newcastle United identify first choice Bruno Guimaraes replacement
Guimaraes wants to join Arsenal but the Premier League champions are yet to make contact with the Magpies, who would demand close to the £100million they sold Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur for.
United are looking at alternatives just in case and Danilo, who sporting director Ross Wilson knows well from their time at Nottingham Forest, is under consideration. It’s claimed the 25-year-old is available for around £26million.
Explaining the situation, Canal do Nicola said: “Palmeiras has priority over Danilo in case of non-negotiation with foreign clubs. But Danilo and Botafogo continue to give the first option, the priority, for an international transfer, if possible, to English football.
“Newcastle, I have already told you, that they are monitoring Danilo's situation. If Bruno Guimaraes is sold to Arsenal, Danilo becomes the first option.
“The speculation is that Chelsea understood that Danilo would be a good replacement for Andre Santos, a Brazilian who was recently negotiated with Manchester United.
“What I can tell you is that Giuliano Bertolucci, Danilo's manager, was the one who tried to make this thing between Danilo and Chelsea advance, but there is no interest from the English club. I can assure you that if Danilo goes to the Premier League, he will go to another club other than Chelsea.”
