Willie McGinest’s Unexpected Role in Tom Brady’s Career Gets Revealed Years Later

Tom Brady spent years doing something most quarterbacks would never admit. Elbow pain accompanied every pitch, yet even after trying various treatments, none appeared to provide an answer.

It was a surprising solution, but it did not come from a doctor calling him, nor from any surgical operation. Instead, a fellowNew England Patriots player intervened, setting in motion events that would change Brady’s life forever.

Inrecent years, Brady has revisited the time when his longtime teammate and former Patriots linebacker, Willie McGinest, stepped in to help him after observing that Brady had been experiencing elbow pain he had not been talking much about.

Rather than recommending surgery or extended rest, the trainer focused on addressing muscle tightness that had been placing constant stress on Brady’s elbow.

“He just grabs me, brings me into this little side training room, and Alex says, ‘What’s the problem?’ ‘My elbow hurts.’ ‘Okay, through manual therapy, muscle work, we’re going to lengthen and soften all the muscles in your forearm, your bicep, and your tricep to relieve the tension on your tendon.’”

“’Your tendon doesn’t hurt because they’re too weak. They hurt because they’re too tight.’”

The treatment produced results almost immediately. Having suffered from the pain for about a decade, Brady said that it was gone in just a few days and completely changed his outlook on recovery and performance in the NFL for the rest of his career.

The backbone of the Patriots’ first dynasty, McGinest played 12 seasons with the Patriots after being selected fourth overall in the 1994 NFL Draft. He won three Super Bowls, was selected to two Pro Bowls, and holds the NFL record for 16 postseason sacks, proving his status as one of the best defensive players in franchise history.

At the same time, Brady’s story is also a reflection of the culture of those Patriots teams. McGinest’s decision to speak with Brady eventually helped him find a treatment that cured years of pain without surgery.

This brief visit to the training room remains one of the least understood factors in the success of the 48-year-old quarterback.
