Christian Gonzalez has done just about everything that theNew England Patriots could have hoped for since drafting him in the first round. He has already earned Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors, established himself as one of the NFL’s top cornerbacks, and made it clear he wants to spend the rest of his career with the Patriots.
Except with a long-term extension still unsigned, fresh comments from a Patriots insider, Greg A. Bedard, have shifted the conversation from Gonzalez’s play on the field to questions about how he’s handling the contract process.

Speaking on NBC Sports Boston, Bedard suggested Gonzalez’s recent social media response to criticism could indicate that negotiations with the team are not progressing as smoothly as many expected.
Bedard said the exchange raised concerns as Gonzalez has yet to secure a new contract despite becoming extension-eligible this offseason. While acknowledging the cornerback’s elite talent, he questioned whether the reaction reflected a level of sensitivity that could complicate negotiations.
“I don’t know how many questions the team has today about him today, but he hasn’t gotten his contract. And that’s he’s a little sensitive about somebody being critical of him? A little bit? I would say maybe it’s not a great sign.”
“yes, I would say that there’s a little bit of sensitivity…this was a knock on him coming out, the mental toughness…I would say there’s still a ways to go with the contract.”

The comments come as uncertainty continues to surround Gonzalez’s long-term future with New England. He was drafted in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Gonzalez is entering the fourth season of his original rookie contract in 2026. However, the Patriots have already exercised his fifth-year option, keeping him under contract through the 2027 season, but the two sides have yet to agree on a long-term extension.
The timing could also prove significant. With several young star cornerbacks around the league due for new contracts, waiting too long could further raise Gonzalez’s asking price.
Top players at the position are already earning more than $30 million annually, and another market-setting extension would only strengthen Gonzalez’s leverage.
Despite Bedard’s concerns, there has been little public indication that the Patriots view the 24-year-old as anything other than a foundational piece.
