New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith was reported to be under investigation due to a June 21 incident at his residence in Davie, Florida. The case began when a woman identified as Smith's ex-girlfriend contacted 911 following an alleged battery and later posted a video of the confrontation on social media.
Now, however, Davie Police has classified the case as inactive after investigators said they could not establish probable cause per a post on X by Rich Cimini. The development comes reportedly due to the police’s inability to review surveillance footage and the existence of conflicting accounts of the incident.
“Due to the inability to review surveillance footage, conflicting stories, and lack of independent witnesses, (the officer) was unable to determine the primary aggressor in the physical altercation,” the police report said.
The 35-year-old had told police that he did not know how to operate the security cameras outside his home and needed to contact the company in order to acquire it. Further, the ring camera showed that the woman “arrived on scene and aggressively knocked on the door while holding his child.”
She later walked out of the house holding a bag as Smith followed her out. The footage showed no evidence of a physical altercation, with the report suggesting that no criminal charges will be filed unless new evidence or information emerges.
Regardless, the NFL has been aware of the Davie investigation and has remained in communication with the Jets as part of its monitoring process under the league's Personal Conduct Policy. As things stand, Smith enters the season after appearing in 15 regular-season games for the Las Vegas Raiders last campaign. He threw for 3,025 yards, 19 touchdowns and 17 interceptions, adding 109 rushing yards on 41 carries.
He was traded to the Jets earlier in March, and is hoping to kickstart what is his second stint in New York.
