Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola’s two-year deal at Anfield may have surprised some, but he has perfectly explained why it is a short-term contract.
The Spaniard has replaced Arne Slot in charge of the Reds, being tasked with bringing success and entertainment back, following a dire 2025/26 season.
Iraola has only joined Liverpool on a two-year deal, however, rather than a more common longer-term contract, raising eyebrows in terms of a potential lack of commitment.
But speaking in Monday’s press conference at the AXA Training Centre, the 44-year-old brilliantly went into detail about his reasoning behind the decision.
“Yeah, two-year deals, I always say, in terms of coaching, contracts don’t matter a lot,” Iraola said.
“I don’t want to be in a place because I have a contract because, ‘Oh, we are not sure, but you have a contract so we stay.’ No, it’s like, ‘OK, I think I signed two years, but it’s basically year to year.’
“When you are a coach, we’ve seen a lot of managers, they have long contracts and because the club doesn’t want, because they don’t want… because in the end, when you are a player it is very important, I think the contract is very important.
“But when you are a manager [it is not]… don’t worry, I hope I can stay here two years – no, a lot more years, it would mean that I’ve done a very good job, but I feel we have to earn [that]. Managers, we have to earn every year the right to continue, especially in clubs like Liverpool, but I do it everywhere. I’ve done it always like this, yes.”

It is impossible to predict how Iraola will fare, with the step up from Bournemouth to Liverpool clearly great, but he has said all the right things so far, impressing greatly.
He is a classy figure who clearly wants to fully immerse himself in the club, and his comments about his contract highlight his humble nature, having to earn a new contract rather than simply be given it at the start.
If Bournemouth’s football is anything to go by, Liverpool supporters are in for a treat, and it will be a much-needed tonic after Slot’s style, which was more controlled even at its best.
Hopefully, Iraola excels in his first two years in the Anfield dugout, earning him an extension, with trophies and attacking football returning for years to come.
