Elsewhere, a surprise move for Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka failed to materialise, despite Chelsea exploring a deal for the experienced midfielder who worked under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.
Outgoings have also become a major focus, with Marc Cucurella joining Real Madrid, Andrey Santos signing for Man United and Tyrique George sealing a permanent exit to Everton already.
While much of the attention has centred on high-profile arrivals, Chelsea are also working quietly on another area of the squad.

According to Chelsea journalist Simon Phillips, the club have made contact with former Southampton and Leeds goalkeeper Alex McCarthy over a potential move to Stamford Bridge.

The 36-year-old is available after leaving St Mary's on a free and is one of several experienced homegrown goalkeepers Chelsea have considered as they look to add depth without committing significant transfer funds.
However, completing the deal may not be straightforward.
Phillips reports that McCarthy's preference is currently to become a first-choice goalkeeper elsewhere rather than accept a supporting role in west London, so he could end up in League One or League Two.

McCarthy would certainly bring both.
The goalkeeper has accumulated nearly 300 senior appearances in total across spells with Reading, Crystal Palace, Leeds, Southampton, QPR, Ipswich Town, Yeovil and others, while also earning an England cap.
Although his opportunities became more limited in recent seasons, he remains well respected for his professionalism and experience around the training ground.
The biggest issue is whether the role appeals to him.
