Liverpool generated a fierce wave of backlash on social media after sharing a post about Alexis Mac Allister ahead of Argentina’s clash against England in the World Cup semi-final.
On Wednesday, Liverpool’s social team shouted out Mac Allister — who insisted that he is not surprised by England's deep run in this year’s World Cup — in a post highlighting his role with the Argentina men’s national team. “Macca and Argentina take on England for a place in the #FIFAWorldCup final,” The Reds wrote alongside a flexed bicep and Argentina flag emoji.
Taking to the comment section, droves of Liverpool supporters slammed the club for allegedly turning its back on England. “Such a disgrace posting this. And I’m a Liverpool fan,” an X user wrote, with another adding: “I’m a Liverpool fan but won’t ever forget the country I’m from.”
A third chimed in, “Imagine doing those emojis on a post about the opponents of your home nation. Keeping it as classy as always, Liverpool.”
Others found little issue with the post, however, noting the long-standing group of Liverpool fans who feel less connected to the national team due to a range of historical and cultural reasons.
“I think everyone in Liverpool has been wanting England to lose since the WC started — they always do so this is hardly surprising,” one person said.
Someone else argued: “All true Liverpool fans want England to lose. You can’t trust any Liverpool fan that supports England.”

While Liverpool’s Mac Allister post sparked plenty of reaction on social media, the midfielder said that his time playing in the Premier League with The Reds helped prepare him for Wednesday’s matchup against England.
"We all want to play this game, we all want to reach the World Cup final. We are all super Argentine, we love our country and our national team," Mac Allister told reporters.
"All we want to do is represent our team in the best way. It's not super special [that I play in England] but it's possibly a help that I know and face them every weekend."
Mac Allister noted that Argentina’s experience in the late stages of the World Cup is also a major “plus,” with La Albiceleste advancing to the semi-finals in three of the last four quadrennial tournaments.

"Obviously having the experience of playing in a World Cup semifinal is a plus, but it doesn't guarantee anything,” Mac Allister said.
“They have players of hierarchy, players that play in important teams and face these situations. Their players play in teams that have participated in important games.”

Despite previously expressing doubt that England had what it takes to advance far into the 2026 World Cup, Mac Allister insisted that he was “not surprised” by the Three Lions’ semi-final run.
"I’m not surprised. As I said, they have very good players and they know what they are doing,” Mac Allister told Sky Sports. “We really respect them and we will try our best to win. It’s going to be a tough game because they are a really good team who we respect a lot."
