Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton recently wrote an article discussing one trade each team should consider making before the beginning of the 2026 season. For the San Francisco 49ers, he chose for them to trade away quarterback Mac Jones for a 2027 second-round pick, but did not specify a team. Below is his reasoning for this trade idea:
“Because of quarterback Brock Purdy’s injury history, the 49ers should keep Jones unless a team offers at least a second-round pick. With that said, San Francisco Chronicle’s Eric BRanch believes the team might trade Jones if 2025 seventh-rounder Kurtis ROurke seems capable of serving as the primary backup.
“Keep in mid that Jones is set to be a free agent next offseason and may chase an opportunity to start elsewhere. Coming off a season in which he threw for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions in 11 games (eight fill-in starts) he won’t be able to increase his stock unless Purdy is on the sidelines.”
Getting a second-round pick for your backup quarterback that is on an expiring deal would be massive for the San Francisco 49ers. There are certainly going to be teams who want to bolster their quarterback room, especially if injuries were to occur. Having a second second-round selection in the 2027 draft will create some flexibility for the future as well. The San Francisco 49ers have a $3.13 million cap hit for this upcoming season and then a $2.712 million in 2027 as a void year in Jones’ contract. It will be intriguing to see where Mac Jones plays next season.
