Faithful Flashbacks #41: Brodie’s Clutch Return

In honor of the San Francisco 49ers celebrating their 80th anniversary, Sactown Sports is kicking off a countdown of the 80 greatest moments in the franchise’s illustrious history in reverse order called “Faithful Flashbacks.”

From Super Bowl-winning plays to overperforming teams that had minimal expectations, there’s plenty to choose from the team with five titles under its belt.

The voting was conducted by a handful of the Sactown Sports’ staffers before results were compiled into a full list that will count down to the 49ers’ 2026 NFL regular season debut against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia, on September 10th.

Faithful Flashbacks -- San Francisco 49ers 80 Best Moments

Coming in at No. 41 on our ‘Faithful Flashbacks’ countdown of the 80 best moments in franchise history is John Brodie returning from injury to help the 49ers clinch a third straight NFC West title.

Heading into the 1972 regular season, Brodie had already done plenty for the franchise. He had spent his entire career with San Francisco, won the league MVP in 1970, and helped lead the 49ers into one of their best stretches before the dynasty years.

The 49ers had won back-to-back division titles in 1970 and 1971, but Brodie’s 1972 season had been interrupted by an ankle injury that kept him out for much of the second half of the year. Steve Spurrier helped keep San Francisco in the race while Brodie was sidelined, leaving the 49ers with a chance to extend their run if they could handle Minnesota in the regular-season finale.

That game did not start in a way that made the division title feel secure. The Vikings held the lead in the second half, and San Francisco’s season was in danger of ending before the playoffs. Brodie, who had not been the one guiding the offense for weeks, came off the bench and gave the 49ers the late push they needed.

He threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes, including the go-ahead score to Dick Witcher in the final minute, turning a game that could have closed the door on San Francisco’s season into a 20-17 win and another NFC West title.

The 49ers’ playoff run ended the following week against Dallas, which had become a familiar postseason problem during that stretch. San Francisco had reached the NFC Championship Game in each of the previous two seasons, but the Cowboys eliminated them from the playoffs for a third straight year.

That ending keeps the 1972 team from being remembered with the same weight as later eras, but Brodie’s return against Minnesota still gave the 49ers their third consecutive division title and served as one more memorable chapter for one of the franchise’s most important pre-Montana quarterbacks.
