(KBTX) - Texas A&M athletes were recognized Wednesday night at the ESPYS, with former Aggie defensive end Myles Garrett taking home two trophies and current volleyball player Kyndal Stowers earning a nomination.
Garrett wins two ESPYs
----------------------
Garrett won Best NFL Player and Best Record-Breaking Performance at the ceremony, which is considered the sports equivalent of the Grammys or Emmys. The Best Record-Breaking Performance award recognized his 23-sack single-season NFL record set during the 2025 season with the Cleveland Browns.
Garrett was also a unanimous selection for the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year — an award he has won twice in his career. He is the first Aggie to win an individual ESPY since Johnny Manziel in 2013.
Garrett spent all nine of his NFL seasons with the Cleveland Browns after being selected with the first overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Over 134 career games, he recorded 125.5 sacks, 412 total tackles, 23 forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries.
His record-breaking 2025 campaign — in which he surpassed the previous single-season sack record with 23 — came in his final season in Cleveland. The Browns subsequently traded Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for two-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick and a 2029 third-round pick.
Stowers nominated for comeback award
------------------------------------
Current Aggie volleyball player Kyndal Stowers was one of four nominees for the ESPY Comeback Athlete of the Year. Stowers had previously medically retired from the sport following multiple concussions at Baylor before transferring to Texas A&M. She helped lead the Aggies to their first national championship in program history last season and was named the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
NFL running back Christian McCafery ended up winning the Comeback Athlete of the Year. After an injury-plagued 2024 season that limited him to just four games due to Achilles tendinitis, McCaffrey returned to start all 17 games in 2025. He led the 49ers and ranked among the best in the NFL, compiling 1,202 rushing yards, 924 receiving yards, and 17 total touchdowns.
